TOJEONG BIGYEOL · 2027 丁未
How to Read Your 2027 Tojeong Bigyeol
A step-by-step guide to calculating your Tojeong Bigyeol for the Jeongmi year (丁未, 2027) and reading the hexagram you get. No calculator needed, just your lunar birthday.
What is Tojeong Bigyeol?
Tojeong Bigyeol (土亭秘訣) is a Korean yearly fortune traditionally attributed to the mid-Joseon scholar Tojeong Yi Ji-ham (1517–1578). It spread alongside the custom of looking ahead at the year in the first lunar month, and it remains one of Korea's most popular New Year readings around Seollal.
Where saju reads your lifelong foundation from the four pillars of your birth, Tojeong Bigyeol focuses on "this one year." Your lunar birthday and the target year produce three numbers, and those numbers point to one hexagram out of 144.
What you need first
- Your lunar birthday: Tojeong is calculated on the lunar calendar. If you only know your solar birthday, Luna Alley's Tojeong page converts it automatically.
- Leap month: if you were born in a leap month, the traditional method counts it as the regular month with the same number.
- Target year: for a 2027 reading, the target year is 2027 (Jeongmi). If you look early, before Seollal, be careful not to pick 2026.
The formula
The hexagram has three parts: upper, middle and lower. If a remainder is 0, use the divisor itself (8, 6 or 3).
| Part | Formula | Options |
|---|---|---|
| Upper | (Korean age in the target year + that year's taese number) ÷ 8, remainder | 8 |
| Middle | (days in your birth month in the target year + that month's wolgeon number) ÷ 6, remainder | 6 |
| Lower | (your birth day + the iljin number of that day in the target year) ÷ 3, remainder | 3 |
8 × 6 × 3 = 144 hexagrams. The taese number for 2027 is 19. Korean age counts your birth year as age 1 (2027 − birth year + 1). Days in the month are 30 for a long lunar month and 29 for a short one in 2027. The wolgeon and iljin numbers are traditional values attached to the sexagenary names of that month and day, so you need the 2027 calendar to look them up; that's the most tedious part by hand.
Worked example: lunar March 15, 1991
- Upper: Korean age 37 in 2027 + taese 19 = 56 → remainder of ÷ 8 = 8
- Middle: lunar month 3 of 2027 is a short month of 29 days, and its stem-branch 甲辰 has wolgeon 14 → 43, remainder of ÷ 6 = 1
- Lower: birth day 15 + iljin 15 for 庚午, the day stem-branch of lunar 3/15 in 2027 = 30 → remainder of ÷ 3 = 3
So this person's 2027 hexagram is No. 813: "The sign of avoiding the unlucky side and following the lucky one." The "How we calculated it" table on Luna Alley's Tojeong page shows exactly the same numbers, so you can check them yourself.
How to read your hexagram
- Overview: each hexagram has a four-line classical poem describing the year. Luna Alley keeps the original Chinese characters and adds a plain modern reading.
- Monthly readings: there are separate readings for all twelve lunar months. A mix of good, neutral and cautious months is normal, so use it as a map of when to push and when to rest, not as a verdict on the whole year.
- Harsh wording: old texts often use frightening phrases. Luna Alley rewrites them as "points to be careful about." Read them as advance notice, not fate.
Common mistakes
- Entering a solar birthday as if it were lunar. Solar March 15 and lunar March 15 are about a month apart, giving a completely different hexagram.
- Using international age. Tojeong uses Korean age.
- Being born on lunar day 30 when that month in 2027 has only 29 days. Luna Alley uses the iljin of day 29 and notes this on the result.
- Not changing the target year. If you look in December, make sure the target year is 2027.
When to read it
Traditionally people read it between Seollal (February 7, 2027) and the first full moon, Jeongwol Daeboreum (February 21, 2027). Many now read it at year's end to plan ahead. In saju the year changes at Ipchun, February 4, 2027. Whenever you look, the same birthday gives the same hexagram.

Frequently asked questions
How is Tojeong Bigyeol different from saju?
Saju uses the four pillars of your birth year, month, day and hour to read your lifelong foundation and ten-year cycles. Tojeong Bigyeol uses your lunar birthday and the target year to pick one of 144 hexagrams for that single year. Together they show both your foundation and this year's weather.
Can I use only my solar birthday?
Yes. Choose solar on Luna Alley's Tojeong page and enter your birthday; it finds your lunar date using Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute calendar data.
What if I was born in a leap month?
Tick the leap-month box. The calculation follows tradition and uses the regular month with the same number.
Is the result always the same?
Yes. With the same lunar birthday and target year, you always get the same hexagram and the same reading.
