The original verse and its meaning
- 羣羊雄振飛 胡雁揚翼
The flock of sheep rises up vigorously, and the northern wild goose spreads its wings wide. - 霜月飛螢 用之何時
A firefly flying on a frosty moonlit night — when would its light ever be used? - 風前東柿 興盡悲來
Like the eastern persimmon tree standing before the wind, when merriment is spent, sorrow comes. - 莫恨初困 晩節生光
Do not lament your early hardship, for you will shine in a later season.
The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.
The year ahead
This is a year that's hard at first but shines late. Like a firefly on a frosty moonlit night, you may seem of little use now, but your time will come. When merriment runs out, sorrow follows, so don't get carried away, and don't resent the hardship at the start.
This is a year when, though it's hard at first, light shines at the end. The vigorously rising sheep and the wild goose spreading its wings in the first verse mean your heart is full of the will to soar. But as in the second verse, a firefly on a frosty moonlit night seems to have light without the right time to use it, so don't be disappointed that you're not recognized right now. The persimmon tree before the wind in the third verse teaches you to be careful precisely when your spirits are high. The more pleasant things happen, the more you should keep your spending and words in check, and the less room sorrow will have to slip in. In the first half you easily make wasted trips here and there or get drawn to fanciful greed, so weigh substance first. The last verse's words that you'll shine in a later season are the core of this year. For those who endure without resenting early hardships, a path opens like spring sunlight entering even a deep valley in late autumn. Don't hurry — fill your year with consistency.
A word from Master Tojeong
“Even a firefly on a frosty night does not lose its own light. Do not resent your early hardship — endure, and your light shall show itself in a later season.”

Who gets this hexagram?
The hexagram depends on your lunar birth date and the year being read. The upper number comes from your Korean age that year plus the year's taese number, the middle from the length and month number of your birth month that year, and the lower from your birth day plus the day number. So the same person gets a different hexagram each year.
By the formula, nobody receives this hexagram in 2027. Lunar month lengths and cycles change each year, so it does turn up in other years. For example, someone born on lunar 6/1/1986 receives this hexagram in 2028.
