The original verse and its meaning
- 有弓無矢 來賊何防
You have a bow but no arrows — how will you stop the thief who comes raiding? - 日出瑤臺 才勝德薄
The sun has risen above the jade tower, but talent runs ahead of virtue. - 蠅何無家 更付牛尾
Saying it has no home, the fly clings once more to the ox's tail as it goes. - 福門自開 仁弄通隣
The gate of blessings opens of its own accord, and a kind heart reaches the neighbors.
The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.
The year ahead
This is a year when you have talent but feel short of the tools or chances to use it. When talent runs ahead of virtue, it doesn't last, so stay humble. Like a fly riding on an ox's tail, follow good people and you'll go far, and in the end the door to blessings will open.
This is a year when you easily feel you have the talent but lack the tools or opportunities to use it. The arrowless bow of the first verse means you're not prepared enough to stop sudden events, so you need a mindset of preparing in advance. The second verse warns that your talent stands out like the risen sun, but without virtue to match it won't last long. So this year, cultivate humility and consideration as much as skill. The fly and the ox's tail in the third verse is the wisdom that when your own strength falls short, you can go far by following good people. The last verse is a promise that if you connect with your neighbors with a kind heart, the gate of blessings opens on its own. Early in the year many things are blocked, but they gradually ease from summer, and at year's end there's joy like sweet rain at the end of a great drought. Build virtue without hurrying, and the year ends brightly.
A word from Master Tojeong
“If you have no arrows, do not blame the bow — make arrows. For one whose virtue runs ahead of their talent, the gate of blessings opens of itself.”
