The original verse and its meaning

1. 池中之魚 終無活計
   A fish in a pond, it seems there is no way to live in the end.
2. 蛇入龍穴 誰勝誰負
   A snake has entered the dragon's den; who will win and who will lose, no one can tell.
3. 浪裏乘槎 不知東南
   Riding a raft amid the waves, you cannot tell east from south.
4. 孤松棲鶯 無味春光
   An oriole nests in a lone pine, yet the spring light is only lonely.

The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.

The year ahead

This is a year when you feel stifled and trapped. You may collide with a tough opponent, like a snake entering a dragon's cave to fight. You can easily lose your bearings like a raft in the waves, so don't rush; hold out firmly like a lone pine.

This year begins stuffy, as if blocked on every side. The first line, a fish in a pond, describes being trapped in a small space, unable to reach open water. A snake entering a dragon's den means you may face an opponent or situation beyond your strength, so the best plan is to avoid forced power struggles. Like a raft in the waves, it's easy to lose your bearings now, so don't rush big decisions; seek advice from someone you trust. The line about the oriole on the lone pine with lonely spring light means that even when good things come, your heart may feel empty. Even so, the pine stays green through winter. In the first half, hold on while minding your words and conduct, and from the eighth lunar month a benefactor's help arrives. In autumn your home grows peaceful and money gradually increases, and in the twelfth lunar month you'll see the reward of waiting for your time. It's an ill-omened reading, but if you walk carefully, it's a year you can smile at by the end.

1. Lunar month 1Feb 7 – Mar 7Even

   This month it may feel as though no one around you is on your side. Be especially careful, since words exchanged with people close to you can spread in strange ways.

   兄神發動 四面楚歌 守口如甁 意外舌禍 · Your siblings' energy stirs and you seem surrounded by enemies on all sides; guard your mouth like a bottle stopper to escape unexpected trouble from words.

2. Lunar month 2Mar 8 – Apr 6Even

   It's easy to linger over missed chances this month. Struggling to hold on to what has already gone will only drain you.

   鳥已高飛 張網何待 時雨大至 往罷山獵 · The bird has already flown high, so why spread your net and wait? Heavy rain comes right on time, so give up the mountain hunt and go home.

3. Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Even

   This is a month to fold your wings and rest awhile. Rather than starting something big, polish what you have and take care of your body.

   靑山細雨 白鶴捲翼 身運小痞 謀事可愼 · A fine rain falls on the green mountains and the white crane folds its wings; your personal luck is a little blocked, so be cautious when planning anything.

4. Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Even

   The stifling current continues a little longer this month. Struggling in the same place with the same methods tends to keep you running in place.

   亦如去月 欲脫未脫 吉方何處 宜行東北 · As last month, you try to break free but cannot; your lucky direction is the northeast.

5. Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Even

   This is a month when the final touch can easily be missing, like rice that's almost done but not quite steamed through.

   爲山九仭 功虧一簣 所營多端 別無所得 · Building a mountain nine fathoms high, you lose the work for lack of one basket of earth; you start many things but gain little.

6. Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Care

   It's easy to get caught up in other people's affairs and suffer needless loss this month. Best not to go near quarrels or accident scenes around you.

   隣家失火 爛額上客 雖曰功名 都是虛聞 · Fire breaks out next door and a noble guest burns his brow; even fame and honor are nothing but empty rumors.

7. Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Even

   There are signs of money coming in this month, but holding on to it isn't easy. More people will butt into money talk, so keep records of deals and promises.

   年憂年晴 不知前程 土財雖旺 奪之者多 · Whether a year of worry or a year of clear skies, you can't see the road ahead. Wealth from the earth flourishes, but many seek to take it.

8. Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Even

   This is a welcome month when a helpful friend appears at your side. But you're not the only one eyeing good chances, so if you hesitate, they may go to someone else.

   申酉月令 恩友來護 奏失白鹿 天下共追 · In the seventh and eighth lunar months, a friend who remembers your kindness comes to guard you; let the white deer slip away and the whole world gives chase.

9. Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Even

   Your view opens up and your heart feels much lighter this month. Moving house or redecorating brings comfort into your home.

   遠望千里 景槪一新 入宅小康 人口增進 · Gazing a thousand li (a traditional unit of distance) into the distance, the scenery is new; move into a new home and things ease a little, and the household grows.

10. Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Even

    Long-awaited efforts begin to bear fruit this month. Your financial luck revives, so carry out the things you've hesitated over step by step.

    江上碧桃 始結其實 財物旺盛 勿失此時 · The green peach by the river finally bears fruit; while wealth is flourishing, don't miss this chance.

11. Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Even

    This is a month of congratulations for happy news. In your excitement, spending can grow and your guard can slip, so be careful.

    金玉滿堂 人人來賀 害在何方 南北有害 · Gold and jade fill your house and everyone comes to congratulate you, but harm lies to the south and north.

12. Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Bright

    The brightest light of the year shines at its end this month. The reward of patient waiting comes back as money and recognition.

    待時活動 小財可得 財福兼全 萬人仰視 · Wait for the right time and move, and you'll gain a little wealth; with both wealth and blessings in hand, many look up to you.

Who gets this hexagram?
