The original verse and its meaning

1. 蘞手提弓 射而不中
   Gripping the bow with a trembling hand, you shoot but do not hit.
2. 有道晩行 誰云指示
   There is a road, but you set out late, so who will show you the way?
3. 二人抱木 擬是成功
   Two people embrace a tree together, and with this they can achieve merit.
4. 飛去南風 每事屬屬
   Flying on the south wind, every matter follows on and on.

The year ahead

This is a year when results don't match the effort you put in. You may be walking a late road alone with no one to show you the way. You can succeed if you join forces, like two people wrapping their arms around a tree together, so don't try to do it alone.

This is a frustrating year when results don't follow your efforts. The first line, shooting a bow with a trembling hand and missing, means that if you set out with a wavering heart and incomplete preparation, you'll miss the target. A road that exists but which you set out on late, with no one to show you the way, means you can easily miss your timing or wander alone. But the third line, two people embracing a tree together to achieve merit, is the key to this reading. Don't try to do it alone; join forces with someone you trust and the way will open. The last line, flying on the south wind with everything following on, means that once you catch the current, things come one after another. In the first half, be careful of quarrels, financial losses and new ventures, and in the tenth and eleventh lunar months, beware of a change of heart in someone close. From the seventh lunar month comes a flow that's bad first and good after, and in the twelfth lunar month you'll bear sweet fruit after your hardships.

“A trembling hand cannot hit the target. Calm your heart and embrace the tree together with a good friend. In the twelfth lunar month, the bitter shall end and the sweet shall come.”

1. Lunar month 1Feb 7 – Mar 7Care

   It's easy to put effort in the wrong place this month. If you can't tell what will work from what won't, you'll only wear yourself out.

   捕兎于海 終無所得 東北兩方 損財可畏 · You try to catch a rabbit in the sea and gain nothing in the end; you fear losing wealth in two directions, east and north.

2. Lunar month 2Mar 8 – Apr 6Even

   You can't see well ahead and feel at a loss this month. Clinging to methods that don't work only makes things harder.

   日月不明 前程有險 以錐撥灰 徒費心力 · The sun and moon are not bright, so the road ahead is rough; like sifting ash with an awl, you wear out your heart in vain.

3. Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Care

   This is a month to watch over the people close to you and your household. Carefully look after the health and feelings of your spouse or family.

   白虎克財 妻宮有厄 勿爲爭論 訟事不絶 · The White Tiger strikes at your wealth and there's trouble for your spouse; don't quarrel. Lawsuits won't cease.

4. Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Care

   Things don't keep up with your enthusiasm this month. Taking on new work or a side gig easily leads to loss.

   欲飛不飛 事事不利 勿營他事 終見損害 · You want to fly but cannot, so nothing goes well; don't plan other ventures. You'll lose out in the end.

5. Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Even

   Good chances and regrets come together this month. One thing you've long prepared bears fruit, but not every wish comes true.

   老龍得珠 向時成功 有意莫遂 十常八九 · The old dragon obtains the wish-granting pearl and achieves merit as its time comes, yet eight or nine in ten things you intend go unrealized.

6. Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Care

   This is a month when sticking with familiar work serves you better than new work.

   守舊安常 事無虛失 財在何方 南方可知 · Keep to the old ways and be content with the ordinary, and you'll suffer no needless loss; wealth can be found in the south.

7. Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Even

   Sunlight reaches places that were dark this month. It's hard at first, but things loosen up as time passes.

   日照陰厓 先凶後吉 雨下春草 憂散喜生 · The sun shines on the shaded cliff, so first comes bad and then good; rain falls on the spring grass, worries scatter and joy arises.

8. Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Even

   Blessings come this month when you choose your company well. With good people, the things you've hoped for come true.

   可別人情 所望如意 持身謹愼 自有名利 · Choose your friends with care for their character and what you wish goes as you intend; be prudent in your conduct and fame and profit come on their own.

9. Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Even

   You meet sweet rain after your hardships this month. But you need to be careful around places connected with water.

   旱苗逢雨 先苦後甘 水鬼窺門 莫近水邊 · Parched sprouts meet the rain, so hardship comes first and sweetness after, but a water ghost peers at your door, so don't go near the water.

10. Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Care

    It's a frustrating month when you can't enjoy what's right in front of you. You may miss a chance for want of one bit of preparation, so check everything thoroughly.

    對飯無箸 有物失主 厄在時刻 宜行東方 · You face a meal but have no chopsticks, the thing is there but its owner is lost; trouble is close at hand, so go east.

11. Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Care

    It's hard to get help and your heart grows tired this month. Even with people close to you, it's best not to reveal everything on your mind.

    困木難長 雨露無恩 不知人心 親人反害 · A weary tree struggles to grow and even rain and dew bring no grace; not knowing people's hearts, a close friend does you harm instead.

12. Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Even

    You bear sweet fruit at the end of the year this month. If you don't miss the chance that comes, you'll gain a new harvest.

    不失好機 可以生産 苦盡甘來 天定之數 · If you don't miss a good chance, you can be productive; the bitter ending and the sweet arriving is the fortune heaven has set.
