The original verse and its meaning

1. 妖魔八庭 作孽蘭芝
   A wicked air has crept into the courtyard, seeking to harm the precious orchids and fragrant herbs.
2. 生東投西 五倫不合
   Born in the east yet cast away to the west, the bonds between people are at odds.
3. 東宇西閣 金鼓爭鳴
   From the eastern house and the western pavilion, gongs and drums clamor noisily, each refusing to yield.
4. 雪裡飛鳥 獅鳴橋上
   Weary as a bird flying through a snowstorm; on the bridge a lion roars, and you fear to cross.

The year ahead

This is a year when things that cloud your heart can easily arise close by. Connections may cross and harmony may break, like being born in the east and heading west. It's noisy, like drums competing between the east house and the west pavilion, so be careful with your words and actions.

This year, things close by that cloud your heart are more worrying than any great disaster outside. The first line, a wicked air in the courtyard harming orchids and herbs, means the precious people beside you, or work you've carefully nurtured, could be hurt by stray words and temptations. Being born in the east and thrown to the west is a warning that plans and results can easily diverge, and your duties to family or old friends can easily fall out of step. The gongs and drums of the eastern house and western pavilion depict quarrels where everyone raises their voice, so rather than trying to win, the one who lowers their voice first ends up better off. The bird flying through snow is a person who is weary but doesn't fold their wings, and the lion on the bridge is a signal to look once more before you cross. That said, it isn't dark all year: in the second and tenth lunar months, unexpected financial luck shines through, and there are people in the east and southwest who will reach out to you. Decide what you'll protect and be sparing with your words and steps, and even an ill-omened reading can be crossed safely.

“The wind that has entered the courtyard is not stopped by shutting the gate tight; only by sweeping the courtyard clean does it find no place to stay. Lower your voice and keep what must be kept, and even the bird in the snow will find its nest at last.”

1. Lunar month 1Feb 7 – Mar 7Even

   In the first lunar month of the new year, things may feel slow, like a field where the awaited rain just won't come. When you grow impatient, even small sounds can startle you and cloud your judgment.

   久旱不雨 草木不長 心神退散 常多虛驚 · After a long drought no rain falls and the grass and trees cannot grow; your mind scatters and you're often startled for no reason.

2. Lunar month 2Mar 8 – Apr 6Bright

   Sweet rain falls after last month's drought. A small offering of effort or investment may come back as a bigger share than you expected.

   以小易大 財運亨通 財星入門 偶然得財 · You trade something small for something big, so your finances go well; the star of wealth enters your door and money comes by chance.

3. Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Even

   The closer the relationship, the more hurt feelings can grow when money and favors get tangled this month. Even when you help, give only as much as you'd be fine never getting back.

   親友愼之 恩反爲仇 西南兩方 必有貴人 · Beware of close friends; kindness may come back as enmity. In the two directions of the southwest there may be benefactors.

4. Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Care

   Your body and mind tire easily this month, so cut back on overloaded schedules. In particular, it's best to postpone long trips to the northwest or business trips to unfamiliar places if you can.

   吉日良辰 致誠度厄 若行西北 疾病可侵 · Choose a good day and offer your devotion and you can get past trouble, but go northwest and illness may invade.

5. Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Care

   Even if hardships continue, this is a month to believe that this rough patch is a passing cloud. If you endure the early difficulties, a flow follows that lets you breathe.

   莫恨辛苦 初困後泰 莫向東南 横厄可畏 · Don't lament your suffering; though it's hard at first, it eases later. Don't go southeast; unexpected trouble is to be feared.

6. Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Even

   It's hard to get help from those you lean on, and hurtful things may happen this month. Blaming others only hurts your heart more, so focus on what you can do yourself.

   六親無德 到處有害 運數如此 禱厄則吉 · Your close relatives bring no benefit and there's harm wherever you go, but such is the fortune, so a heart that prays away trouble brings luck.

7. Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Even

   A single word can easily turn into a dispute this month, and troublesome issues with documents or rules may come up. Read contracts and official papers carefully and don't miss deadlines.

   僅免口舌 横被官厄 東方貴人 必是助我 · You barely avoid a quarrel, but unexpected legal trouble may arise. A benefactor in the east can help you.

8. Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Even

   This is a month to shut the gates of your heart firmly and keep a step away from others' quarrels. Even if asked to judge who's right, don't take sides easily.

   防意如城 勿參是非 守分安居 凶變爲吉 · Hold your resolve firm as a fortress and don't get involved in disputes. Keep to your place and live at ease, and bad turns to good.

9. Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Even

   Your heart feels empty this month, as if you've briefly lost your way home, but happy news waits at the end. You may be recognized at work, or something welcome may happen involving your spouse.

   雪中飛鳥 夕陽失巢 若非官祿 妻宮有喜 · The bird flying through the snow has lost its nest at dusk, but if not in office, there is joy on your wife's side.

10. Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Bright

    This is the month financial energy blooms brightest all year. Someone whose surname carries Wood (木) energy may give you a good offer or help.

    木姓來助 偶然横財 九十月令 必有財旺 · Someone whose surname carries Wood (木) energy comes to help, so you gain great wealth by chance; in the ninth and tenth lunar months, wealth flourishes.

11. Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Care

    This is a month to hold out alone, like a plum blossom standing upright in the cold snow. Just for this month, avoid money dealings or partnerships with people whose surnames carry Water (水) energy.

    雪滿窓前 寒梅獨立 水姓愼之 損財可慮 · Snow fills the view before the window, and the winter plum stands alone. Beware of a Water (水) surname; there's worry you'll lose money.

12. Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Care

    It's the last hill of the year and you're out of breath, but if you hold on, the road opens this month. Valuables and documents get lost easily, so decide where to keep them.

    此月之數 死中求生 可怕失物 預爲祈禱 · This month's fortune is like seeking life amid death; there's fear of losing things, so offer your devotion in advance.
