The original verse and its meaning

1. 魚鱗脫釣 張網何免
   The fish has slipped off the hook, but how can it escape the net spread out below?
2. 寒根春來 欲發難發
   Spring has come to the cold roots, yet though they try to sprout, the shoots won't easily appear.
3. 有利南北 何危貴榮
   There is benefit to the south and north, so how could there be danger in noble honor?
4. 冥而不明 誰怨誰尤
   It is dark and not bright, so whom will you resent and whom will you blame?

The year ahead

This is a year when, even after getting past one crisis, you need to watch for the next. Even when spring comes to cold roots, shoots don't sprout easily. There's profit to the south and north, but a valued position may be at risk, so don't blame others for things that happen in the dark.

This is a cautious year when, even after clearing one hurdle, you must watch for the next. The first line, slipping off the hook yet struggling to escape the net, means that if you let your guard down after overcoming one crisis, you may fall into another trap. Spring coming to cold roots yet the shoots not easily appearing paints the frustration of things sprouting slowly even though the time has come. The line about benefit in the south and north holds the hope that if you set your direction well, you can keep a noble position and honor. The last line, asking whom to blame when it's dark, teaches you to look at yourself rather than resent others when things aren't clear. From the third to the seventh lunar month, financial losses and problems with health and people continue, so keep an especially low profile and hold steady. As the second half goes on, the energy loosens; in the eleventh lunar month money piles up, and in the twelfth lunar month you reach an ending of poor first and rich later. Endure the first half calmly, and flowers will finally bloom even from cold roots.

1. Lunar month 1Feb 7 – Mar 7Even

   You can't see a road in any direction and feel stifled this month. You may feel hurt that your efforts aren't recognized, but now is the time to save your strength.

   四方無路 進退不之 有功不賞 徒費心力 · There's no road in any direction, so advancing and retreating don't go as you wish; even with merit there's no reward, and you spend your heart and strength in vain.

2. Lunar month 2Mar 8 – Apr 6Even

   Financial luck shines this month, but it's not as enjoyable as you'd hoped. Rather than pouring your heart into money talk, calmly maintain your daily life.

   此月之數 財利莫論 淸天無月 反爲無味 · This month don't speak of wealth and profit; with no moon in the clear sky, it's rather joyless.

3. Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Care

   It's a month of much hardship, like walking a dark, rainy road. Letting strangers into your home or work could cost you, so be careful.

   夜雨行路 辛苦不少 外人勿入 損財非輕 · Traveling in the night rain, your hardship is no small thing; don't let outsiders in, for the financial loss is not light.

4. Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Care

   This is a month to be careful with both people and places. Avoid the waterside and dangerous places, and look after your own health and your family elders'.

   利我者少 害我者多 莫近水邊 橫厄可慮 · Few benefit you and many harm you; don't go near the water, for unexpected trouble is a worry.

5. Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Care

   Work you've labored over wobbles and money leaks easily this month. Even with a close friend, avoid money dealings or partnerships this month.

   事有瓦解 損財不少 莫近親友 空然損害 · Matters crumble like roof tiles and financial losses are no small thing; don't get close to dear friends, you'll lose out needlessly.

6. Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Care

   Regret may follow giddy pleasure this month. It's best to put off ventures with other people this month.

   鳥焚其巢 樂極哀生 與人不利 求事有虛 · The bird burns its own nest; too much pleasure breeds sorrow, joining with others brings no benefit, and what you seek holds emptiness.

7. Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Care

   This is a month to take special care of your body and mind. Rest enough so fatigue doesn't build up, and look after your family elders' health too.

   七八兩月 疾病愼之 若無官祿 必然身憂 · In both the seventh and eighth lunar months, beware of illness; if not in office, there may be worries for your body.

8. Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Even

   This is a month when weighing this and that can make you lose both.

   瞻前顧後 蟹網俱失 出外無益 守家爲吉 · Looking ahead and glancing back, you lose both the crab and the net; there's no profit in going out, and guarding the home is auspicious.

9. Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Even

   Moving without a plan easily scatters your work this month. Set the order of your tasks and proceed step by step.

   事無頭緖 終見失敗 利在南方 小財必得 · If your affairs lack order you'll see failure in the end; profit lies to the south, where you can gain a little wealth.

10. Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Even

    You may feel hurt by people who don't recognize your true worth this month. Even if you're not recognized, don't doubt your own value.

    拘玉懷珠 悵無知者 雖有生財 小得大失 · You hold jade and embrace pearls, yet no one recognizes them, which is sad; even when wealth comes, you gain little and lose much.

11. Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Even

    After a long winter, the rain and wind grow gentle this month. Money piles up bit by bit and your household gains some breathing room.

    雨順風調 百物長養 堆金積玉 當時石崇 · Rain is gentle and wind is even, so all things grow; you heap up gold and gather jade, like Shi Chong (a legendary rich man of ancient China) in his day.

12. Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Bright

    This is a bright month when the year's hardships pass like a dream and honor arrives. Your efforts are recognized and you earn people's respect.

    先貧後富 往事如夢 一身榮華 人人仰視 · Poor first and rich later, past events seem like a dream; you are honored and everyone looks up to you.
