The original verse and its meaning
- 三顧未看 吾意惰慢
You call three times and still fail to meet, for your will was idle and slack. - 玉盤佳肴 見而不食
You see fine food on a jade tray before your eyes, yet cannot eat it. - 南樓失路 孤入北門
Losing your way at the southern pavilion, you enter alone through the northern gate. - 流雁南北 華落吉晝
The wild geese drift north and south, and the flowers fall in broad daylight.
The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.
The year ahead
This is a year when a lack of devotion can easily make you miss chances. Like seeing fine food on a jade tray yet being unable to eat it, you may fail to grasp what's before you. Things cross wires, like getting lost at the south pavilion and entering through the north gate, so pull yourself together again.
This is a year when opportunities can easily slip from your hands if your devotion falls even a little short. The first line, calling three times without meeting because your will was slack, teaches you to set your own mindset straight before blaming others. Seeing fine food on a jade tray yet not eating paints the regret of missing a chance right before your eyes because you weren't ready. Losing your way at the southern pavilion and entering through the northern gate means ending up somewhere other than where you meant to go, so check the road once more before setting out. Wild geese drifting north and south and flowers falling in daylight warn that your heart may wander and good times may pass emptily. The third and fourth, eighth and twelfth lunar months call for special care, so be prudent in travel and relationships. Still, in the ninth lunar month there's financial energy to raise your household with bare hands, and in the eleventh lunar month happy things overlap, like a thirsty dragon finding water. Sweep away idleness and put in the devotion to call once more, and even an ill-omened reading turns into a good ending later.
A word from Master Tojeong
“Even calling three times at the thatched cottage (as Liu Bei did to win his strategist), the door opens only with sincerity. Idleness makes you lose the way and devotion helps you find it, so do not spare the effort of calling once more.”
