The original verse and its meaning
- 骨肉相爭 手足絶脈
Those who share blood quarrel with each other, as if the pulse in hands and feet were cut. - 昔日逃禪 背恩忘德
Like one who once hid away from the world, you turn your back on kindness and forget virtue. - 無影交思 亦忘財主
Setting your heart on empty, shadowless friendships, you forget even the master of the wealth that helped you. - 風驅合雲 日冷月寒
The wind drives the clouds together, and the sun turns cold and the moon chill.
The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.
The year ahead
This is a year to be careful of conflict with family or people close to you. Kindness received may be forgotten and goodwill betrayed. Your heart may grow chilly, like wind driving clouds until the sun and moon turn cold, so reach out first and make peace.
This is a year when you must cherish your relationships with those closest to you most of all. The line about blood relations quarreling as if the pulse in hands and feet were cut is a warning that conflicts with family or longtime colleagues can drain your strength. Turning your back on kindness and forgetting virtue means others may do this to you, or you may do it without thinking, so look after the people you're grateful to first. Shadowless friendships point to connections without substance or promises that are only words. If your heart is stolen by those, you'll miss the very people who helped you. As the wind drives clouds together and the sun and moon grow cold, a chilly-hearted period may last a while. Still, from the tenth lunar month help comes from old connections, and in the eleventh lunar month unexpected success and money arrive. If you reach out first and keep to your place, you'll gain something precious at year's end, like sifting sand to find gold.
A word from Master Tojeong
“When hands and feet quarrel, the body collapses; this is a year when the one who reaches out first wins. Do not forget the kindness you have received. Sift the sand again and again and gold will appear at last, so be patient and wait.”
