Tojeong Bigyeol Hexagram 632

The original verse and its meaning

1. 怒奪燕軍 無處不傷
   In a furious charge you seized the army of Yan, yet there is no part of you left unhurt.
2. 日月尙明 火起東方
   The sun and moon are still bright, but flames rise in the east.
3. 三虫食血 誰勝誰負
   Three bugs suck each other's blood, and no one can tell who will win or lose.
4. 敗軍之將 無面渡江
   The general who lost the battle has no face to cross the river and go home.

The year ahead

This is a year when pushing through by force leaves scars. Unexpected things happen, like fire breaking out in the east while the sun and moon shine bright. Don't get drawn into fights over interests, like three insects fighting over blood, and don't cling to your pride in a battle you've lost.

This is a year when, if you push through by force, even victory leaves wounds. As in the line about seizing the enemy's army in a fury yet being hurt all over, a victory led by anger ends up wearing you out. The sun and moon still being bright means your underlying luck hasn't gone out completely, so there's no need to lose heart too much. But like fire breaking out in the east, things may erupt from unexpected places, so you need a mindset of preparing ahead. Three bugs sucking each other's blood points to situations where no one gains amid tangled rivalries or fights over interests. The greatest wisdom is not to step into such fights in the first place. The defeated general with no face to cross the river is best read as a warning not to miss the time to step back because of pride. If you make this a year of holding steady and resting, you can get through it by year's end without major trouble.

   A cautious energy hangs over the very start of the year this month. It's best not to take on things that look risky or make unreasonable promises.

   足踏虎尾 空谷傳聲 病殺來侵 疾苦不離 · As if treading on a tiger's tail with sound echoing through an empty valley, it's perilous. The energy of illness arrives and pain may not leave.

2. Lunar month 2Mar 8 – Apr 6Even

   What's meant to end ends naturally this month. If you don't force yourself to hold on to relationships or work that have already withered, things actually lighten up.

   殘花逢霜 自然零落 不思人情 凡事如意 · The withered flower meets the frost and falls of its own accord. Still, if you aren't bound by sentiment, things easily go as you wish.

3. Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Care

   Your energy weakens easily this month, so look after both your health and your home. Clean the house and sort out old things, and your mind clears too.

   妖鬼窺門 疾病可侵 致誠宅神 災消福來 · A wicked energy peers at your door, so illness may invade. Tend your household with devotion and calamity vanishes and blessings come.

4. Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Care

   Your judgment clouds easily this month, so it's better to postpone important decisions. Avoid long trips, night travel and reckless driving, and leave yourself extra time when moving about.

   如醉如夢 事多暗味 勿爲出路 或有橫厄 · Matters are hazy, as if drunk or dreaming. Don't set out on the road; there may be unexpected trouble.

5. Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Care

   Things you want to start anew don't go as planned this month. Rather than being disappointed, put your strength into protecting what you have now.

   雖有謀事 不中奈何 動則有失 守舊爲上 · Even if you have plans, they don't fit, so what can be done? Moving brings loss, so keeping to the old ways is best.

6. Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Even

   Honesty protects you this month. Small lies or tricks come back later as bigger burdens.

   欺心之事 勿施於人 若近木姓 必有其害 · Don't deceive people. Get close to someone of a Wood (木) surname and there may be harm.

7. Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Even

   This is a month to look around close by rather than seeking opportunities far away.

   勿爲遠行 別無所得 得羊失牛 有何益也 · Don't go far; there's little to gain. If you gain a sheep and lose an ox, what profit is there?

8. Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Even

   At work, don't branch out; focus on your main job this month. Instead, welcome energy shines on your home, like news of a wedding or a new family member.

   勿營他事 到處不利 若無婚姻 必有弄璋 · Don't start other ventures; it's unfavorable wherever you go. If not a wedding, then there's the joy of gaining a son.

9. Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Care

   Your body and mind both tire easily this month. Don't suffer alone; open your heart to someone you trust.

   每事不成 又何疾病 深山幽谷 心思悽然 · Nothing gets done, and illness piles on top. Your heart is lonely, as if in a quiet valley deep in the mountains.

10. Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Even

    Expecting money from the wrong places turns into wasted effort this month. Be suspicious first of any story that promises big returns.

    此月之數 財利莫論 入海求金 求兎碧海 · This month's fortune has no financial profit to speak of. It's like entering the sea for gold or seeking a rabbit in the blue ocean.

11. Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Care

    There are many things you started that won't finish this month. Rather than starting new things, focus on bringing what you've begun to an end.

    雖有勞苦 徒勞無功 有頭無尾 事事不成 · Even with effort, it's only wasted labor with no merit. There's a head but no tail, so nothing gets done.

12. Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Care

    It's easy to feel lonely at year's end, but all the more, it's important to comfort yourself. Turn down unreasonable requests or partnership offers and quietly wrap up the year.

    出頭何方 四無顧親 木姓有害 近則有害 · Wherever you go, there's no close friend in any direction to look after you. A Wood (木) surname is harmful; get close and there's harm.
