The original verse and its meaning

1. 千里之程 一日行之
   You travel a road a thousand li (a traditional unit of distance) long in a single day, and matters dash forward in the blink of an eye.
2. 其事何蔭 千斯萬斯
   Not knowing what the matter leans on to stand, the work only multiplies in a thousand and ten thousand branches.
3. 百尺竿頭 一席飄飄
   Like a single mat flapping in the wind atop a hundred-foot pole, the seat you sit in is precarious.
4. 斜陽天際 怒節北北
   At the edge of the sky where the sun sinks, the north wind blows in fury, so at dusk you must take care of yourself.

The year ahead

This is a year when things move very fast. But starting countless ventures without knowing what you're relying on is risky. It's precarious, like standing at the tip of a hundred-foot pole with your footing shaking, so rein in your ambitions as the sun goes down.

This is a year when things pick up speed. As in the first line, traveling a thousand li in a day, matters move quickly and what you set your mind on seems almost within reach. But the second line asks what shade that work is leaning on. If you just keep starting this and that without checking roots and foundations, the number of tasks may multiply into a thousand branches. The top of the hundred-foot pole in the third line means the higher you've climbed, the greater the swaying. The better things go, the more you should look down at your footing once more. The evening sky and north wind of the last line warn that a cold wind may blow at the tail end of the year or as work wraps up. Gather in the good energy of spring and early autumn well, and set down greed in the later season, and you can close the year in peace.

1. Lunar month 1Feb 7 – Mar 7Even

   In the first lunar month your heart easily runs ahead. If you reach the ferry and there's no boat, wisdom is not forcing a crossing but waiting for the boat to come.

   欲速不達 臨津無船 時運來到 勸君守分 · If you try to hurry you won't arrive; it's like reaching the ferry with no boat. The time is coming, so you're urged to keep to your place.

2. Lunar month 2Mar 8 – Apr 6Care

   In the second lunar month you may be anxious because your strength or preparation falls short of what you want to do. If the rope is short, the first thing is to lengthen it, not to lean in and fall into the well.

   汲深綆短 心緖煩惱 東南兩方 出行不利 · You want to draw water from a deep well but the bucket rope is short, so your heart is frustrated. Going out to the southeast is unfavorable.

3. Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Care

   In the third lunar month your mouth can easily become the root of trouble. Words tossed off as jokes or stories passed on about others can grow in strange ways, so be careful.

   愼之言語 妄言有害 官災可慮 勿參是非 · You must watch your words. Careless words can do harm and bring legal trouble, so don't get involved in disputes.

4. Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Bright

   The fourth lunar month is a month when your energy comes alive like a fish in water. Work you've labored over may be recognized, or unexpected income may come in.

   魚龍得水 必有慶事 若非官祿 橫財之數 · Fish and dragon have found their water, so there may be a celebration. If not fortune in office, unexpected wealth comes in.

5. Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Bright

   Bright energy continues in the fifth lunar month. As the saying goes that heaven helps the good, the virtue you've built may return as unexpected help.

   身數大吉 喜事重重 吉人天佑 不勞而得 · Your personal fortune is greatly auspicious and joys come layer upon layer. Heaven helps good people, and there's gain even without striving.

6. Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Even

   In the sixth lunar month, leaning on the good flow of the previous months, greed easily grows. Even running here and there, little stays in your hands, so for now protecting is the profitable move.

   貪利不止 後悔莫追 東奔西走 別無所得 · If you covet profit without stopping, regretting it later is no use. Even rushing east and west, you gain little.

7. Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Even

   In the seventh lunar month the road ahead may feel long, as if a great mountain stands in the way. But a mountain can be crossed by climbing one step at a time, so don't be impatient.

   萬里遠程 去去泰山 善人親之 惡人遠之 · You go on and on along a road ten thousand li long, and a great mountain stands before you. Stay close to good people and keep away from wicked ones.

8. Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Even

   In the eighth lunar month attempts out of season yield little. Just as seeds must be sown in spring, first weigh what it's time to do now.

   雪裡播種 難收其功 歲月如流 每事速圖 · You sow seeds in the snow, so it's hard to reap the reward. The years are like flowing water, so pursue each matter promptly.

9. Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Even

   In the ninth lunar month things are generally smooth and beneficial news may come from the west. Meanwhile, it's a month to carefully look after the health and feelings of your spouse or someone close.

   事事亨通 利在西方 妻宮有厄 預爲度厄 · Every matter flows freely and profit lies in the west. But there's trouble on your wife's side, so you must ward it off in advance.

10. Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Bright

    The tenth lunar month is one of the brightest months of the year. There's an energy of rising in position or growing your household, and someone who helps appears.

    若非官祿 加土地增 貴人相助 財祿陳陳 · If not fortune in office, your land increases. A noble person helps, so wealth and rewards pile up steadily.

11. Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Bright

    In the eleventh lunar month the merit of quietly enduring bears fruit. Bigger results than you expected may come, so trust your efforts so far.

    勸苦之德 意外成功 萬事之中 忍之爲上 · Thanks to hard toil you succeed unexpectedly. Of all things, patience is the greatest.

12. Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Even

    In the twelfth lunar month there's the fortune of a deal where you give a little and gain a lot. But as year-end gatherings multiply, money easily leaks to drinking and nightlife, so be careful.

    以羊易牛 小往大來 莫近酒色 損財之數 · Trading a sheep for an ox, little goes and much comes. Get close to wine and lust and you may lose money.

Who gets this hexagram?
