The original verse and its meaning

1. 一枝梅花 春雨霏霏
   On a single branch of plum blossoms, spring rain falls softly.
2. 衆力扶身 榮木乃
   The strength of many people holds me up, so the tree flourishes lushly.
3. 有事南北 用之不竭
   Though there is business in the south and in the north, you use and use again and it never runs out.
4. 抽上掛中 有高處
   Drawn upward and hung in the middle, you will rise to a high position.

   寅卯之月 財星照門 缺月復圓 萬事如意 · In the first and second months, spring warmth returns to the frozen ground and the plum blossom smiles first, so the matter you have long waited on finally puts out its first shoots.

2. Lunar month 2Mar 8 – Apr 6Bright

   This is a month when skills that had stayed hidden come to light and earn recognition. When an opportunity comes, don't hesitate; step forward with confidence.

   潛龍昇天 萬人仰視 渴龍得水 必有吉事 · A fine drizzle wets the branches and the petals grow lovely; with many hands holding it up together, even a heavy load is light.

3. Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Even

   This is a month when you can achieve even big things if you join forces with like-minded people. Trust the people you work with and divide the roles, and things become much easier.

   二人同心 其利斷金 月明新城 佳人抱玉 · In the third and fourth months the roots go deeper and the branches spread, so there is a happy event in the household and the family may grow.

4. Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Bright

   This is a month when your home fills with warm energy. Long-held worries ease and there's more to smile about.

   辰巳之月 和氣到門 憂散喜生 和氣滿堂 · A bird nests on a high branch and your name travels far, so a superior draws you up and your position rises.

5. Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Care

   This is a month when, even in a good flow, you should pause for breath and take care. Check anything involving paperwork or rules carefully.

   此月之數 官災可畏 與人相爭 終時未決 · Under the blazing sun of the fifth month there is much talk, so disputes reach your door; meddling rashly in official matters brings no benefit.

6. Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Even

   This is a month when everything you do adds a little, evenly.

   鳳飛千仞 五色玲瓏 於農於商 莫非我利 · The monsoon rain does not let up, so the road turns to mud; if there is a flaw in your documents, gossip follows.

7. Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Even

   This is a month when small benefits gather from all around. But the good and the bad are mixed, so keep an eye on what goes out as well as what comes in.

   利在到處 日得千金 自天祐之 吉無不利 · In the seventh and eighth months you hurry north and south, yet however much you spend, your storehouse never empties.

8. Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Even

   This is a month when cheerful gatherings and breathing room appear. Trust people and treat them sincerely, and they'll point you down a good path.

   身醉花間 其樂不淺 信乎於人 指示生路 · You would launch a boat on a misty river but cannot see the far shore, so put off long journeys by water for a while.

9. Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Care

   This is a month when you may feel at a loss before a task with no end in sight. Don't force your way across; step back and look over the road.

   若涉大水 浩無津涯 東方木姓 不利於我 · In the autumn wind someone close has a change of heart, so do not plan great undertakings with those of Wood (木) surnames from the east.

10. Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Even

    This is a month when hurt feelings come easily in close relationships. Even with people you trust, keep money and important matters clear.

    霜落楓林 綠葉黃落 兄耶弟耶 信斧斫足 · In the frost-covered yard brothers turn their backs on each other, but if you reach out first, the ice will melt.

11. Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Even

    This is a month when you can easily face tasks before you're fully prepared. Double-check important documents and contracts for gaps.

    有弓無矢 來賊何防 文書逢空 素服之數 · Even in the snow the plum branch holds its flower buds, so if you rest your body and build up your strength, good fortune will turn your way again.

12. Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Even

    This is a month when the virtue and effort you've built up all year spread like a subtle fragrance. Even without trying to show off, a good reputation travels on its own.

    桂生雲中 香飄外 · Even after rising to a high position you keep yourself humble, so the scent of the plum blossom carries far, past the turn of the year.

Who gets this hexagram?
