The original verse and its meaning

1. 夜雨行人 進退艱苦
   A traveler walking through the night rain finds it weary both to go forward and to turn back.
2. 木難長 欲飛難飛
   The wings have not yet grown, so though it wishes to fly, flight is hard.
3. 相克相沖 淚滄浪
   Each tries to win and each clashes with the other, so tears flow like waves.
4. 其間最吉 女人緣
   Among it all, the best thing is a bond with a woman.

The year ahead

It's a time when it's hard both to go forward and to step back. You want to fly, but your wings aren't fully grown yet, so build your strength. Even with many collisions, good moments are hidden in between, and connections work out with a woman's help.

This is the year of a traveler walking through the night rain, a time when neither going forward nor turning back is easy. On a rainy night, the more you hurry the more you slip, so slowing your steps and watching the ground at your feet is the best way. As the verse says, the wings haven't fully grown so flight is hard — treat now as a time to build strength rather than soar. There will be many clashes where everyone tries to win, and times when tears come, but if you step aside rather than confront, the wounds will be fewer. The verse says the best thing amid it all is a bond with a woman, so blocked matters open up with help from women such as your mother, wife, sister, or female colleagues. In the fifth lunar month good luck returns, if late, and in the ninth and tenth lunar months money revives little by little. In the first half and at year's end, be careful of long journeys, quarrels, and illness. Keep within your means and cultivate body and mind, and the night rain will stop and dawn will come.

1. Lunar month 1Feb 7 – Mar 7Care

   In the first month of the new year, it's best to put off long trips, moving house, or big relocations. Setting out in the night rain only adds to your hardship.

   此月之數 勿謀遠行 出行不利 愼之愼之 · This month, do not plan long journeys. Setting out on the road is unfavorable, so be cautious and cautious again.

2. Lunar month 2Mar 8 – Apr 6Care

   Even if you're impatient and want to start something, you need to hold back this month. Hasty moves can invite unexpected trouble.

   勿爲妄動 横厄可畏 安分修身 以待天命 · Do not move rashly, for unexpected misfortune is to be feared. Keep within your means, cultivate yourself, and await the will of heaven.

3. Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Even

   The cold recedes and you can breathe a little easier this month. But you may clash with someone close and end up hurt.

   大寒之後 溫風始至 相冲相剋 悲淚可流 · After the great cold passes, a warm wind begins to blow, but clashing and quarreling may bring tears of sorrow.

4. Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Care

   Your heart is heavy and things don't go your way this month. Even household matters are chaotic and you may feel drained, but this weariness is only for a time.

   心中有苦 事有虛荒 家事蒼荒 一時困苦 · There is distress in your heart and your affairs are empty. Household matters are unsettled, so for a time you are troubled and weary.

5. Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Even

   Good luck arrives this month, even if late. Spring's glow is brief, so when you see an opportunity, don't hesitate — seize it.

   東園桃李 片時春光 好運晩回 勿失好機 · The peach and plum blossoms in the eastern garden briefly take on the glow of spring; good luck returns late, so do not miss a good opportunity.

6. Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Care

   This is a month to be careful of both your health and your words. Don't overdo it; take breaks, and look after the health of your family's elders.

   若非疾病 口舌不免 正心安靜 災殃自消 · If not illness, then gossip is hard to avoid. Set your heart right and live quietly, and misfortune will vanish by itself.

7. Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Even

   Old matters or stale relationships may be hard to revive this month. Instead, small new things come alive like freshly sprouting grass.

   枯木朽株 春來不榮 細雨東風 草色靑靑 · Withered trees and rotten stumps cannot bloom even when spring comes, but under fine rain and the east wind, the grass grows green.

8. Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Even

   It's best to put off long trips to the east this month. As at sunset, you'll feel rushed and tend to hurry things.

   出家東行 其禍不少 西山落日 步步忙忙 · If you leave home and go east, the misfortune will be no small thing. The sun sets over the western hills, and every step is hurried.

9. Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Even

   You may be harmed this month because of someone else's affairs. Keep your distance from other people's quarrels or problems.

   城門失火 殃及池魚 南北兩方 財物自旺 · Fire breaks out at the city gate, and the disaster reaches even the fish in the pond. From the two directions of south and north, wealth flourishes naturally.

10. Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Even

    Relations between superiors and subordinates may not be smooth this month. But your work is worth pursuing and money is flowing in.

    上下不調 吉凶相半 事可謀矣 財可如意 · Those above and below are not in balance, so good and bad are half and half, but your affairs are worth planning and wealth easily goes as you wish.

11. Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Even

    Someone unexpected lends you strength this month. Cherish your connection with a person who has come from the south.

    南來貴人 偶然助力 若非生産 服制之數 · A benefactor from the south happens to lend his strength. If not the joy of childbirth, there may be a matter concerning a family elder.

12. Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Care

    At the end of the year, trouble and losses easily overlap this month. Take a second look at deals or promises involving someone surnamed Oh or Kwon.

    吳權兩姓 必有損害 官災口舌 種種有之 · There may be loss from two clans, the Oh (吳) and the Kwon (權). Legal trouble and gossip arise in one form or another.

Who gets this hexagram?

The hexagram depends on your lunar birth date and the year being read. The upper number comes from your Korean age that year plus the year's taese number, the middle from the length and month number of your birth month that year, and the lower from your birth day plus the day number. So the same person gets a different hexagram each year.

By the formula, nobody receives this hexagram in 2027. Lunar month lengths and cycles change each year, so it does turn up in other years. For example, someone born on lunar 6/2/1989 receives this hexagram in 2028.
