The original verse and its meaning
The full moon has grown perfectly round, yet there comes a time when it wanes again. -
A rat has crept into the deep storehouse, but a tabby cat keeps watch, its eyes lighting the door. -
So glad and merry that you never tire of it.
A rooster crows at the foot of the mountain, and suddenly a wistful feeling rises.
The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.
The year ahead
Like a full moon, you have plenty right now, but what is full is bound to wane. Just as you'd guard the storehouse against mice, you need the wisdom to keep the wealth that comes in from leaking away. Don't get carried away by pleasure; keep your mind awake like a rooster crowing at dawn, and you'll get through the year safely.
This is a year when what you have looks plentiful, like a round full moon. But a full moon wanes, so a heart that saves and guards when things overflow is likely to be the key to your year. A rat in the deep storehouse with a tabby cat guarding the door means there are gaps where money can slip out, and also the power to stop them. The more you're absorbed in fun and never tire of it, the more your spending and commitments quietly grow, so be the cat yourself and keep an eye on your storehouse. Feeling wistful at a rooster's crow below the mountain also means your excited heart settles and you find yourself looking back on the past. From spring to early summer, watch out for losing things, trouble, and wasted trips; in autumn, you'll be busy going back and forth seeking opportunities. If you keep within your means instead of chasing big desires, you'll pass the year safely, just as the waning moon fills again.
A word from Master Tojeong
“Even the moon wanes once it is full, my friend. Save while you have plenty and keep the storehouse door firmly guarded, and the waning moon shall grow round once more.”
Month by month (summary)
Only a short note and the original verse for each month. Dates are the 2027 lunar months.
- Lunar month 1Feb 7 – Mar 7Even
The new year starts off fresh, but the finish may grow hazy. It's like looking for a deer in the market when deer live in the mountains, so first check whether what you want matches where you're looking.
The beginning is good but what follows is gloomy, so be cautious in all things. You seek a deer in the marketplace and in the end gain nothing.
- Lunar month 2Mar 8 – Apr 6Even
Though nothing much seems to be happening on the surface, real substance is quietly filling up inside this month. No need to be anxious just because there are no visible results.
This month is like the last, but amid what seems empty there is substance, so your heart feels naturally at ease.
- Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Care
Be especially careful about losing things or money leaking away this month. Start with small things like locking doors, your wallet, and passwords.
If not a thief, then worry — so beware of thieves. You climb a tree seeking fish and in the end gain nothing.
- Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Care
Words multiply and disputes grow tangled this month. Quarrels easily arise with people whose surnames belong to the Fire element (in Korean tradition, surnames are classed by the Five Elements), so keep a step back when dealing with them.
莫近火姓 口舌紛紛 利在南方 西北有損 · Do not draw close to those with Fire (火) surnames, for gossip runs wild. Benefit lies to the south, and loss to the northwest.
- Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Care
Your heart races ahead but things just won't budge this month. You'll get hurt less by waiting for the right time than by forcing things.
You try to advance but cannot — what can be done about fortune? Gossip over groundless matters reaches your ears.
- Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Care
Whether you stay home or go out, your heart feels unsettled this month. At times like this, calming your mind comes before changing places.
At home your mind is troubled, and going out brings no gain. Do not set out on the road south — it will not benefit you.
- Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Even
A phoenix nesting and singing in the paulownia tree is a sign that a good time has arrived. Things that were tied up all summer gradually find their way.
The golden phoenix soars at dusk and sings of autumn in the paulownia tree; the time has come, so it is worth a try.
- Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Care
As if you've found a candle in the darkness, the road ahead starts to come into view a little. But if that light excites you into wanting more than your share, things quickly turn hollow.
You find a candle in the dark night, and the road ahead is bright. But do not covet beyond your means — it is empty.
- Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Even
You may clash with superiors or rules this month. Circumstances keep changing, so watch the flow rather than digging in your heels.
The official-trouble spirit stirs and the punishment star clings stubbornly; times shift and affairs change, and honor and profit recede day by day.
- Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Even
Amid busy comings and goings, small efforts return as great rewards this month. Opportunities arise from things that keep you moving, like business trips, fieldwork, and travel.
This month the small departs and the great arrives; the Traveling Horse star enters you, and you rush east and west.
- Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Care
This is a month when guarding where you stand is better than starting anything new.
Keeping within your means is the best course; moving brings regret. Do not go near a house of mourning, or worry will arise.
- Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Care
It's year's end and your mind is busy, but things don't move forward well. Money dealings or business partnership talk with close friends can easily lead to loss, so decline politely.
You try to go but cannot advance — what can be done about fortune? Do not mix business with close friends; there is only loss and no gain.

Who gets this hexagram?
The hexagram depends on your lunar birth date and the year being read. The upper number comes from your Korean age that year plus the year's taese number, the middle from the length and month number of your birth month that year, and the lower from your birth day plus the day number. So the same person gets a different hexagram each year.
For example, someone born on lunar 3/5/1990 receives this hexagram in 2027.
