The original verse and its meaning

1. 不知安分 互有乖常
   Not knowing how to keep within your means, things go awry against one another and against reason.
2. 萬里無雲 海天一碧
   Not a single cloud for ten thousand li, and sea and sky are one and the same blue.
3. 池中之魚 終無活計
   A fish in a pond, in the end it has no way to live.
4. 老龍無 江邊濤
   The old dragon has lost its strength and only gazes at the waves by the river.

The year ahead

When greed goes too far, relationships go wrong. Empty your heart like a cloudless sky and the way will open. If you feel trapped like a fish in a pond, you need to widen your field. Don't push yourself in the face of rough waves.

This is a year when balancing desire and your means matters above all. As in the first verse, if you want too much without knowing your limits, people and things easily go awry. The cloudless sky of the second verse means the clear view you see when you empty your mind, so the more desire you shed, the clearer the path becomes. The fish in a pond of the third verse is trapped in a narrow place with its way of life blocked, so if your current framework feels stifling, widen your field through learning and connections rather than forcing yourself to hang on. The old dragon of the fourth verse stands drained before rough waves, a warning not to leap into big waves when your energy is weak. It's an unlucky reading, but in summer a benefactor helps from the south, and in spring you'll find a thread of resolution after long hardship. As the original says, you lose first and gain later, so even if you suffer a loss, it will come back as a lesson. Keep within your means and walk calmly, and you'll cross this year's waves safely.

   Your heart turns only outward and you miss home this month. Steadying your heart in a familiar place is more beneficial than wandering to new ones.

   身遊外方 何時歸家 百而思之 不如安居 · Your body wanders outside — when will you return home? Think it over a hundred times, and nothing beats living in peace.

   It's easy to cling to things that don't make sense this month. If something can't work, letting it go early reduces your losses.

   炊沙成飯 萬無其理 老龍失水 江邊垂淚 · You soak sand to cook rice, which makes not the slightest sense; the old dragon has lost its water and sheds tears by the river.

3. Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Care

   This is a month when leaning on others can easily end up hurting you.

   擧頭望他 他人害我 愼勿遠行 出則有悔 · You raise your head and look to others, but others do you harm; be careful not to go on long journeys, for going out brings regret.

4. Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Care

   A long-standing problem finds a thread toward a solution this month. Even if it looks like a loss right now, there's something to gain after it.

   三年病客 偶逢名醫 莫恨困苦 先損後益 · One who was ill for three years happens to meet a famous physician; do not lament your hardship, for you lose first and gain later.

5. Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Even

   Things flow on without a break, but it's easy to get swept along by talk this month. Don't move money based on tempting rumors or recommendations.

   山中有雨 川流不息 人言勿信 必然損財 · Rain falls in the mountains and the stream flows without rest, but do not trust others' words, or you will lose wealth.

6. Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Bright

   The brightest energy of the year arrives this month. Like dew on a lotus leaf, things roll along smoothly.

   露濕蓮葉 圓轉可愛 貴人助我 宜行南方 · Dew wets the lotus leaf and rolls round and lovely; a benefactor helps you, so it is fitting to go south.

7. Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Even

   You may feel deflated when expected things don't work out this month. Still, moving outside creates chances for money.

   申酉之月 事有虛妄 財爻發動 出行則吉 · In the seventh and eighth months there is emptiness in your affairs, but the energy of wealth stirs, so going out is auspicious.

8. Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Even

   A good connection approaches on its own this month. Your work has a clear beginning and end, so wrap it up step by step.

   美人自來 月明林下 事有頭尾 有失無敗 · A lovely one comes of their own accord, beneath a moonlit grove; your affairs have a beginning and an end, so though there is loss, there is no collapse.

9. Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Even

   There's benefit toward the south this month. Fun gatherings and affectionate meetings warm your heart.

   利在何方 南方有吉 美酒佳肴 對酌美人 · Where does benefit lie? There is good fortune in the south; with fine wine and dishes, you sit facing a lovely one and share cups.

10. Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Even

    This is a month to look after real substance rather than outward appearances.

    此月之數 虛名無實 貴人何姓 朴宋大吉 · This month's fortune is an empty name without substance; which surname is your benefactor? The Park and Song clans are greatly auspicious.

11. Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Even

    This is a month to focus on small tasks rather than big plans.

    勿謀大事 必有失敗 財爻不美 妻宮受克 · Do not plan great affairs, for there will be failure; the energy of wealth is poor, so the place of your wife is under strain.

12. Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Care

    It's the tail end of a year when it's easy to lose your way. Push big expenses or money dealings to the new year.

    夜行失燭 不知東西 財數不吉 損財甚多 · You lose your candle on a night road and cannot tell east from west; financial luck is poor, and the loss of wealth is very great.
