The original verse and its meaning

1. 夜逢山君 進退兩難
   On a night road you meet the Lord of the Mountain (the tiger), and can neither go forward nor turn back.
2. 暮道難行 誰有指示
   The road at dusk is hard to travel — who will point the way?
3. 靑山細雨 蒼鷹頭
   Fine rain falls on the green mountain, and the falcon bows its head.
4. 掛燈書壁 分南天
   You hang a lamp and write on the wall, gauging the southern sky.

The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.

The year ahead

This is a year when you come face to face with something frightening and find it hard to choose either way. Rather than walking a dark road alone, find someone who can show you the way. Even if your spirits sag like a hawk caught in the rain, prepare calmly, as if keeping a lamp lit, and the way will appear.

This is a year of facing things you can't easily decide. The tiger met on a night road in the first verse stands for trouble you can neither avoid nor confront; panicking makes it more dangerous, so the wise thing is to stop first and catch your breath. The second verse says there's no guide on the road at dusk, which reads as advice to seek counsel from experienced people rather than trying to solve things alone. In the third verse, the rain-soaked falcon bowing its head speaks of a time when momentum is broken, but the falcon flies again once the rain stops. The fourth verse's image of hanging a lamp and writing on the wall depicts someone who calmly studies and makes plans even in the dark. It's an unlucky reading, but nothing to be scared of — it's a year when the path reveals itself step by step to those who prepare without hurrying. There are welcome things in spring and late summer too, so replenish your strength then. Aim to protect rather than to win big, and you'll cross the year safely.

   It's a month that flows smoothly. If you only count gains and losses there's some disappointment, but news that lifts your heart arrives.

   此月之數 得小失多 吉星照門 喜事重重 · This month's fortune: what you gain is little and what you lose is much, but a good star shines on your door and joys come layer upon layer.

2. Lunar month 2Mar 8 – Apr 6Even

   It's a smooth month, but you need to watch your words. Your work bears fruit step by step like spring, but if you get involved in others' quarrels, anger spills onto the wrong people.

   桃李逢春 花開結實 勿參是非 怒甲移乙 · Peach and plum meet spring and bloom and bear fruit, but do not get involved in quarrels — you will move the anger meant for one onto another.

3. Lunar month 3Apr 7 – May 5Even

   Hold steady and it's an okay month. Even if false rumors spread, don't be shaken until you've checked the facts.

   市中有虎 傳之者誤 東南之財 意外入門 · Saying there is a tiger in the marketplace is the fault of whoever spread it; wealth from the southeast comes unexpectedly through your door.

4. Lunar month 4May 6 – Jun 4Care

   There's a lot to be careful about this month. Your energy drops easily, so cut back on crowded places and overcommitments.

   莫近他人 疾病相侵 西山落日 所懷何事 · Do not draw close to others, for illness will intrude. The sun sets over the western hills — what is it you hold in your heart?

5. Lunar month 5Jun 5 – Jul 3Bright

   Welcome things await this month. Good news and welcome meetings come, and your heart feels much lighter.

   紅杏碧桃 善能惑人 吉祥臨身 必有喜事 · Red apricots and green peaches easily bewitch people, but an auspicious energy touches you, so there may be joyful news.

6. Lunar month 6Jul 4 – Aug 1Care

   This is a month not to overdo it but to take a breather. Things are hazy as if hidden by clouds, so postpone big decisions.

   月入雲間 不見好月 若非失物 妻宮不利 · The moon goes into the clouds and you cannot see the fair moon; if you do not lose things, it will be unfavorable for your wife.

7. Lunar month 7Aug 2 – Aug 31Even

   Good and bad are half and half this month. Your feelings and the other person's may cross, leaving you hurt.

   青山有意 綠水無情 猛虎出林 其勢當當 · The green mountain has feelings but the blue water is heartless; a fierce tiger comes out of the forest, its bearing imposing.

8. Lunar month 8Sep 1 – Sep 29Bright

   It's a month of bright energy. Things you were worried about unexpectedly turn out well, and you can relax.

   轉禍爲福 心中無憂 時雲不到 守舊安分 · Misfortune turns into blessing, so there is no worry in your heart; but the time has not yet come, so keep to the old and be at ease with your lot.

9. Lunar month 9Sep 30 – Oct 28Care

   This is a month to step back and hold steady. Matters concerning siblings or people close to you may weigh on your mind.

   兄爻受克 棣園有憂 若非如此 官災可畏 · The place of your siblings is under strain, so there is worry among siblings; otherwise, misfortune from the authorities is to be feared.

10. Lunar month 10Oct 29 – Nov 27Even

    Good and bad are half and half this month. It's easy to miss problems right under your nose, so look around you first.

    灯下不明 近墨者黑 善人親之 惡人遠之 · It is darkest beneath the lamp, and whoever draws near the ink turns black; draw near the good and keep away from the wicked.

11. Lunar month 11Nov 28 – Dec 27Care

    There's a lot to be careful about this month. Income from outside is welcome, but it's no use if your body doesn't keep up.

    此月之數 外財可得 身數不吉 疾病可愼 · This month's fortune: you may gain wealth from outside, but your bodily fortune is poor, so beware of illness.

12. Lunar month 12Dec 28 – Jan 26, 2028Even

    Hold steady and it's an okay month. Things that were hidden all year brighten little by little, and you can achieve what you hoped for.

    雲散月出 所望可成 若欲出行 宜向西方 · The clouds scatter and the moon comes out, so you can achieve what you hoped for; if you set out on the road, go west.

Who gets this hexagram?
