The original verse and its meaning
- 樹佩月 花開花落
As if a tree embraced the moon, flowers bloom and soon fall. - 先吉後凶 非理勿食
The start is good and the end is gloomy, so do not consume what goes against reason. - 草草 庭上其草
The grass grows lush, and what grows in the yard is grass too. - 鶯啼柳幕 夏雨冬雪
An oriole sings in the willow curtain; in summer there is rain, in winter there is snow.
The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.
The year ahead
Things can easily start well and turn difficult later, so think of the end when you begin. Don't covet gains that aren't right. Like a willow where orioles sing, good times and bad times take turns, so don't get carried away or let yourself be broken.
This is a year when good and bad times take turns. As in the first verse, flowers bloom and then fall, so even when joyful things come, don't get carried away — cherish them, knowing they'll fade one day. The second verse teaches that things tend to start well and end badly, so think of the end when you begin, and never take improper gains. The lush grass in the yard of the third verse means small problems pile up the way weeds grow when left untended, so tidy your home and work often. The oriole singing in the willows, with summer rain and winter snow, in the fourth verse says that each season has its own face, so if you act as the times require, there's no trouble. The year's flow is unsettled at the start, brightens greatly in autumn, and calls for caution again at year's end. A heart that is neither overjoyed in good times nor overly crushed in bad ones will protect your year. Flowers fall so that fruit may form, so trust the flow and keep walking.
A word from Master Tojeong
“That flowers bloom and fall is heaven's own way. Do not be giddy in good times, nor broken in bad. Keep away from what defies reason, and your yard shall always be tidy.”
