The original verse and its meaning
- 逢時不 何時待望
If you do not take flight even when you have met a good time, how much longer will you wait? - 愼勿薄待 千里貴客
Do not treat lightly the honored guest who has come a thousand li to find you. - 振飛 胡雁揚翼
As the northern wild goose spreads its wings wide, the time has come to shake free and soar. - 修道遠惡 去舊生新
Pave the right road and keep away from what is bad, and the old will depart and the new will sprout.
The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.
The year ahead
If you hesitate even when a chance comes, you'll end up waiting forever. Don't neglect a valued guest from afar. Make up your mind like a bird spreading its wings, and you can soar. Keep away from what's bad and make a fresh start.
This is a year when it's easy to linger at the threshold even though the door is open. The first verse asks when you'll fly if not now, having met your time — a warning not about a lack of opportunity but about deciding too late. The honored guest from a thousand li away in the second verse means news from afar, unfamiliar people, and first-time offers, so don't push them away on first impressions alone. The third verse's wild goose shaking out its wings depicts the refreshing flight that comes after hesitation ends. It means that once you set your direction, you can fly farther than you think. The fourth verse says to pave the right road and keep away from what is bad, so sorting out habits to drop and relationships to end is itself the preparation for a new start. But good and bad alternate month by month, so the rhythm of moving in good months and catching your breath in bad ones is important. Make it a year of sending off the old and welcoming the new, and by year's end you'll have much lighter wings.
A word from Master Tojeong
“If you only sit while the door stands open, the wind alone shall come and go. If you have wings, spread them; even the wild goose was surely afraid on its first flight. Shake off the old and pave a new road, and this year shall be your point of departure.”
