The original verse and its meaning
- 靡室靡家 窮居無聊
With no house and no room, you live in want and feel only listless. - 垂釣滄海 夕覺南天
You let down your fishing line into the blue sea, and only at evening do you grasp the southern sky. - 寂寞天地 虛送風光
In a silent heaven and earth, you let the fine scenery slip by in vain. - 日西山 寃心自退
When the sun sets over the western hills, the resentful heart withdraws of its own accord.
The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.
The year ahead
Lonely, empty times may continue. Still, when the sun sets behind the western hills, resentment sets along with it. Don't be impatient; use your time alone to strengthen your skills and your heart, and the next year will be different.
This is a year when lonely, empty times continue, but what comes next depends on how you use that time. The first verse's image of living in want with no house or room stands for a time when your foundation wavers or you have no fitting place to rest your heart. The second verse says you let your line down into the sea and only at evening grasp the southern sky, meaning that after a long wait you come to know your direction, if late. The third verse laments letting fine scenery slip by in a silent world, which reads as advice not to let your time alone simply pass. The fourth verse's words that resentment withdraws when the sun sets over the western hills are a comfort that, with time, hurt and grievance settle on their own. Early in the year and in late spring, the paths for household finances and money are blocked, so focus on keeping what you have; in early spring there's an unexpectedly shining opportunity. In summer and autumn, things don't fit well and your mind is troubled, but if you don't get involved in disputes, trouble stays small. At year's end, blessings and income follow like a hungry hawk catching prey, so laughter returns to those who waited sharpening their skills.
A word from Master Tojeong
“Do not throw away the scenery just because all is silent; one who lets down a line shall meet a fish someday. When the sun sets, resentment sets with it. Wait while you sharpen your blade — the day to use it shall come.”
