The original verse and its meaning
- 古人塚上 今人葬之
On top of an ancient person's grave, a person of today is buried again. - 鷄鳴日午 孟嘗出關
By imitating a rooster's crow, Lord Mengchang slips through the pass even at midday. - 太古何人 無天地
In the distant past, what person ever lacked heaven and earth? - 羊草野 魚花柳
The sheep are among the wild grasses, and the fish play in the shade of flowering willows.
The verses follow the public-domain Tojeong Bigyeol held by the National Library of Korea; the meanings are Luna Alley's own retelling.
The year ahead
The same things can easily repeat, so take the mistakes of those before you as a mirror. Like the old tale of slipping through the pass at the rooster's dawn crow, you'll get past a crisis with cleverness and quick wits. Leisurely times will come too, like sheep in the fields and fish in the shade of flowers.
This is a year when past events tend to repeat, so you should walk holding up a mirror. The first verse's image of a new grave dug atop an old one means following in the footsteps of those before, so it's important to record and reflect so you don't repeat past mistakes. The second verse recalls the old story of Lord Mengchang escaping through a pass thanks to a retainer imitating a rooster's crow, meaning even in blocked times you can get past a crisis through wits and people's talents. The third verse says even the ancients had heaven and earth, which reads as comfort that everyone has a foundation to lean on and a time of their own. The sheep in the field and the fish in the flower shade of the fourth verse depict the leisure of enjoying your place without greed. Early in the year you'll need to look after your family elders and your health, but from spring the gates of wealth open, and in autumn there's a quiet abundance, like autumn leaves. In midwinter things don't come together well, so don't overdo it — wait for your time. It's a reading for crossing the year smoothly with a little wit and a heart that knows its measure.
A word from Master Tojeong
“Do not fall again where those before you fell. Even Lord Mengchang passed the gate with a single rooster's crow, so when you are blocked, use your wits. To know your measure and enjoy your leisure — this too is a blessing.”

Who gets this hexagram?
The hexagram depends on your lunar birth date and the year being read. The upper number comes from your Korean age that year plus the year's taese number, the middle from the length and month number of your birth month that year, and the lower from your birth day plus the day number. So the same person gets a different hexagram each year.
By the formula, nobody receives this hexagram in 2027. Lunar month lengths and cycles change each year, so it does turn up in other years. For example, someone born on lunar 6/4/1988 receives this hexagram in 2028.
