The year ahead
This is the year your steady effort finally sees the light. Keep your conduct upright and the dust of the world can't harm you. But if you grow lazy, even blessings won't last, so keep striving to the end. Opportunities come, as if the gates of heaven were opening.
This is a year when the effort you've quietly built up over a long time finally sees the light. As in the first verse, the one who read all night by lamplight returns home in silk, so your hard work comes back as honor and reward. The second verse means that if you conduct yourself properly, the world's rough winds can't shake you, so the better the times, the more neatly you should carry yourself. The third verse is this year's warning: if you're careless, lazy, or dissolute, you won't be able to keep even the blessings you receive for long. The fourth verse's opening of heaven's gate means great opportunities come on their own to those who strive. In spring there's marriage or a happy event, and in autumn and winter abundance and honor arrive layer upon layer. For a time in summer, though, legal trouble and gossip creep in, so be careful with your words and paperwork then. Never let go of your diligence to the end, and this year's blessings will become capital for a lifetime.
